What’s “SIBO?”
SIBO is a condition where there's wayyyyyy too much bacteria in the small intestine, disrupting the normal digestive processes. Normally, the small intestine contains a relatively low number of bacteria at least compared to the colon. However, when there's an overgrowth, it can lead to various digestive symptoms and complications.
A few causes of SIBO:
Impaired Gut Motility: Conditions like IBS, gastroparesis, or surgeries that affect the normal movement of the intestines can predispose individuals to SIBO.
Low Stomach Acid: Stomach acid plays a crucial role in killing off bacteria before they reach the small intestine. Low stomach acid levels can allow bacteria to survive long enough to reach the small intestine.
Anatomical Abnormalities: Structural issues such as intestinal strictures, diverticula, or surgical alterations can disrupt the normal flow of digestive contents, leading to bacterial overgrowth.
Immune System Dysfunction: A compromised immune system (can be caused by antibiotics or other infections) can fail to keep bacterial populations in check, allowing them to grow unchecked in the small intestine.
Symptoms of SIBO:
Bloating and abdominal distension
Diarrhea or constipation (or alternating between the two)
Abdominal pain or discomfort, particularly after eating
Gas and belching
Nausea and vomiting
Fatigue and weakness
Holistic treatment options*
Probiotics and Prebiotics: Certain strains of probiotics can help restore balance to the gut microbiome, while prebiotic fibers feed beneficial bacteria. However, caution should be exercised, as some individuals may experience worsened symptoms with certain probiotics.
Herbal Therapies: Herbal antimicrobials like oregano oil, berberine, and allicin (from garlic) have shown efficacy in reducing bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine.
Stress Management: Stress can exacerbate digestive symptoms and disrupt gut function. Incorporating stress-reducing techniques like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises can be beneficial.
Lifestyle Modifications: Ensuring adequate sleep, staying hydrated, and engaging in regular physical activity can support overall gut health and improve symptoms of SIBO.
*not all cases of SIBO can be treated with a natural approach. Sometimes it’s necessary to use antibiotics to get rid of the bacteria, be sure to contact a health provider that has experience treating this condition.
